Bulk vs Bagged Mulch — When to Switch (and Save $200+)
The crossover point where bulk mulch becomes cheaper than bagged is around 3 cubic yards — but the math changes with delivery fees and bag size. Here's the real comparison:
- Bagged: 2 cu ft bag for $4 = $54/yard equivalent (13.5 bags/yard). No delivery fee, pickup anytime.
- Bulk: $35/yard + delivery fee. At 3 yards: $105 in material + $50-75 delivery = $155-180. That's $57-60/yard — actually MORE expensive than bags.
- Bulk at 5+ yards: $175 material + $50 delivery = $225. $45/yard — now you're saving.
The 5-yard rule: Under 5 yards, bags usually win on total cost. Over 5 yards, bulk wins. Landscape supply yards often have a 3–5 yard minimum anyway, so you're forced into bulk at that scale.
