Why You Must Acclimate Flooring — and How Long It Really Takes

Wood expands and contracts with humidity. If you install flooring straight from the warehouse into your home, it will either gap (dry winter air) or buckle (humid summer air). Acclimation lets the material stabilize to your home's conditions before it's locked in place. Skip this step and the manufacturer's warranty is void.

Acclimation by Material

MaterialTimeHow
Solid Hardwood5-14 daysStack with spacers, cross-ventilate. The longer the better.
Engineered Wood3-7 daysMore stable than solid but still needs time. Open boxes.
LVP / Laminate24-48 hoursMinimal expansion but manufacturer requires it for warranty.
Tile / StoneNot requiredInert materials. No acclimation needed.
⚠️ Critical: The HVAC must be running at normal living temperature (65-75°F) and humidity (30-50%) for the ENTIRE acclimation period. Don't acclimate in a house that's been vacant with no climate control.
